RIGHT TO FREE AND QUALITY EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN-2009

WALVANDA, DECEMBER 08, 2012: Bosco Samajik Vikas Sanstha (BSVS) is engaged in educating the tribal people on accessing their rights from the duty bearers of the state. The present education practices in Jawhar and Mokhada is not positive.

<![endif]>Children in State-run schools often do not get sufficient attention and assistance with their studies due to a shortage of teachers, inability of parents to teach them lack of study materials and irregular teaching. BSVS team studied the issue in detail and realized that the School Management Committees (SMC) which is must for each school as per the law is not functioning appropriately in almost all the villages in the area.

BSVS team studied the issue in detail and realized that the School Management Committees (SMC) which is must for each school as per the law is not functioning appropriately in almost all the villages in the area. It also came into notice that, the SMC can play a vital role in improving the education standard of the area, if the members are made aware about their roles and responsibilities given in the law.
Fr. Anaclete D’Mello, Director of BSVS has asked the team to study the provisions given in the law and to prepare a training module to train the SMC members. BSVS team studied the law and prepared a training module on SMC. Mr. Melvin Pangya, BSVS coordinator conducted a workshop and trained the Staff and facilitators on the roles and functions of SMC.
Staff obtained the list of SMC members from the schools and contacted all the members. Also contacted the Gram Vikas Mandal (GVM) members and teachers and decided training dates for each village.
In the first phase, trainings were organized in all the villages of Jawhar and Mokhada Blocks by the BSVS team from October to December. Role of a village person for the education of children, Schemes for the improvement of education, Composition of SMC – who all should be there in the SMC? Roles and responsibilities of SMC, School Educational Development Plan, Rights of Children, Minimum Levels of learning etc. were the topics dealt in detail during the training.

<![endif]>In the second phase, BSVS team provided training to all the parents of the school children and other people from the village on SMC.

In Talechapada hamlet, a villager stopped the school teacher who was leaving the school before the school time and questioned him about it. In Kevnala, one of the master approached the BSVS staff and pleaded him to not to conduct the training in the village and offered some bribe for it.
Shortly, BSVS will be putting up flex boards with information on minimum levels of learning in the prominent place of each village.
