IX STD STUDENTS OF DB KAWANT ATTEND NINE IS MINE CAMPAIGN AT DELHI

Fr. Greg Almeida sdb

KAWANT-BARODA,  JANUARY 29, 2013 :  It was a proud and happy moment for the students of standard IX to attend the Nine is Mine campaign at New Delhi. Don Bosco School, Kawant, is the only school selected from the Gujarat state to represent this mega event.

Before the campaign would begin, the students were sent to their own villages to identify the problems related to education and health. A survey report was then tabulated and a programme was conducted in order to bring right awareness related to this programme. The survey conducted by the students helped them to realize the lack of quality education in their own villages.

Nine is Mine is a campaign of the children, for the children and by the children of India. It calls for nine per cent of our nation’s public expenditure (GDP) to be committed to health and education by 2014. Currently, India spends about four per cent of its GDP (govt. spending) on Education, and 1.4% on health which is one of the lowest in the world.

The Kothari Commission recommended that India devote six per cent to Education by 1986 while the WHO recommends that all nations should invests five per cent on health. The programme would begin from January 30 to February 03, 2013.

A PUBLIC DAY MARCH is being organized by NINE IS MINE on  February 03, .2013 to get the children from diverse facets engaged in claiming their fundamental rights like any other citizen of India as their voices are ignored and excluded by policy makers. It is one such democratic platform to voice their opinions and perspectives towards influencing policies and decisions that affect them. Children from secure backgrounds would join hands with their deprived peers to ensure that every child relishes the benefits of basic health and quality education.

Ten thousand children from different vulnerable backgrounds viz urban poor, scheduled castes, denotified tribes, from conflict situations, from minority communities across India along with their secure urban school children from secure backgrounds from Delhi are expected to attend the march.

Major Events during the week would be Bal Sunvayis (Children Hearings) ,Workshops to prepare a Children’s Manifesto, Bal Aahwan and Public Day March. During the March, children would be allowed to depict their perspectives and sentiments through creative art forms, banners, posters, impactful slogans and pageantry to raise awareness about the unhealthy state of health and education services in India.

Our best wishes to all the students who would be participating in this campaign to demand what are their basic rights to education and health.
