by Cl. Nevelle Coutinho sdb

NASHIK-MAHARASHTRA, SEPTEMBER 7 2013: Teachers hold a very important place in the life of every student after his family; and so rightly there should be a day set apart for all teachers to make them know how precious and valuable they are to the students. Indeed the students of Divyadaan, Salesian Institute of Philosophy expressed this in a very unique way with the theme YOU MAKE US GROW.

The day began with a prayer service followed by a felicitation program in Fr. Vincent Vaz Hall. The teachers were brought in procession to the hall. The whole show was handled and rocked by the enthusiastic and creative comparing by Vivian and Sachin, which gave a flow to the whole program. In his welcome speech Fr. Robert expressed his gratitude towards the teachers and the students with the message that 'Divyadaan is not about learning philosophy but learning to live, love, care and share with each other and thanking God together.'

The MPH brothers played a melodious tune of instruments in complete harmony. The TYBPH brothers set the stage on fire with their lively dance. An address was read by Nigel and Sagar expressing their sentiments of gratitude towards the teachers. This was followed by the presentation of gifts and cards to all the teachers. The SYBPH went a step ahead to express themselves through a skit which highlighted the sense of duty coupled with love.

The staff members then cut a cake to lively songs. This was followed by a delightful song sung by the FYBPH brothers. The teachers were in for a surprise when they were called to participate in the animated games. The program concluded with a group photo of the staff members and a vote of thanks.

'Every teacher ultimately lives on to inspire others…' the legacy lives on.

by BIS correspondent

MATUNGA-MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 7, 2013: Don Bosco Matunga claimed the under-14 Subroto Mukherjee Football Trophy after defeating Amravati Dynmata School in the finals of the U-14 State Football Champions at Yavatmal in Nagpur. The Matunga boys beat Dynmata School with a difference of 3 goals to one.

The school authorities were hesitant to send the boys for the matches because of late intimation as it would be impossible to make all the necessary arrangements in a single day.  The parents, not able to bear the disappointment on their kids' faces took up the initiative and assured their support in arranging for their transport and stay. They even agreed to accompany the boys to Nagpur.

The boys gave their best. In the quarterfinals they beat Aurangabad 4 goals to nil and in the semifinals they beat Pune 3 goals to nil. One of the players, Clivert Millar, was so jubilant that he said, "We thought we were the underdogs but after drubbing Aurangabad, we knew the title was ours". His father was equally upbeat, 'The kids were the real heroes. They dominated all the games. I'm glad the school authorities supported the boys in the end."

Don Bosco Matunga are now State champions and they will represent Maharashtra at the National level tournament which will be held at New Delhi starting 20th September 2013. The boys, parents and the school are eagerly waiting for the competition and are hoping they become National Champions.

by BIS correspondent

AHMADABAD, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013: The community of Don Bosco Kapadvanj along with the aspirants went on one-day educational tour to the city of Ahmadabad on 4th September 2013.

The whole community set off in the morning after invoking the protection of our Blessed Virgin Mary. They visited the place where the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi spent a large part of his life. On reaching Gandhi ashram, the aspirants were taken to the exhibition-hall where various articles and letters of Mahatma Gandhi were displayed. Thereafter they visited the room that Mahatma Gandhi occupied.

A lady working with the 'Charakha' gave a brief talk on Mahatma Gandhi's work in the ashram. After looking at the pictures, articles and the room of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the aspirants exclaimed, "Coming here was like meeting Mahatma himself!"

After the Ashram the journey continued towards Science city. The aspirants visited the planet and space sections. They were taken up with the things that were displayed and exhibited. They also watched a 3D movie for 60 minutes. The visit to the Science city was really beneficial to all. For some it cleared their doubts and for some it created more doubts with questions like: 'How is all this possible?' Or 'How was this universe created?'

Thereafter the group left for the Kankaria River Front where the aspirants enjoyed themselves by taking a ride on the toy-train that has been running since the 1960's. It was really a wonderful experience.

The visit to Ahmadabad really enriched the aspirants and increased their knowledge about the universe and how things came into being.

BIS # 3665 A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER

Posted on 22:26 by Unknown
by Charlene Gibbs

LONAVLA, September 2, 2013: On the 31st of August 2013, the SYM members of DBYS set out for Don Bosco Lonavla, for a weekend full of fun and frolic. On arrival, the rector - Fr. Solomon addressed the youth and extended a warm welcome to them. After lunch, the enthusiastic group marinated a pigling (renamed SYGgie the Pyggie in honour of the Salesian Youth Group) to be barbecued for dinner.

After the BBQ preparations were done, the group set out on foot for Bushi dam, enjoying a beautiful walk through the green hills and cool drizzle. The walk took a bit of effort but was worth it. The icy water gushing down the steps of the dam revived the exhausted youth as they splashed about in it. After a hot cup of tea, they started their return journey eagerly looking forward to the BBQ party. SYGgie was royally roasted, with the youth singing, making humorous comments and having fun. Dinner was preceded by a thanksgiving prayer for all the wonderful experiences of the day.

On Sunday, the group participated in the Holy Eucharist presided by Fr. Glenn, along with the boys from the boarding. After Mass, the group set out on a hike to Tungarli Dam and to Microwave hill. It was a steep climb up mountains and along winding tracks - an adventure everyone enjoyed and will treasure forever. The scenic panorama of the valley below was simply breathtaking and serene. To top it all, Mr. Chris J. Ndallo, the director of Tanzania Youth Cultural Exchange Network (TYCEN) who joined the group on this trip, shared his memories of being in a Salesian school in Tanzania and his experience of heading an NGO that empowers youth through networking across countries.

Before the group left, they played a football match with the boarders. They then trekked to the railway station to catch a train back to Mumbai, rejuvenated and ready to get on with their busy schedules.

BIS # 3664 TO LORD GANESHA WITH LOVE - GOING GREEN

Posted on 02:44 by Unknown
by Ms. Sunita D'Souza

WADALA-MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 2, 2013: It's that time of the year again when streets, shops, homes and offices are decked up and prepared for the installation of the idols of Lord Ganesha. St. Joseph's High School has also begun preparing the students for the festival – the Green Ganesha way. On the 30th of August, 2013, ten students from very class from Std. I - X assembled in the school hall for the 'Green Ganesha Workshop'. An eco-friendly organisation - Vidyamargam, demonstrated and helped the students in the preparation of Lord Ganesha idols that were eco-friendly, adorable and creative.

Ms. Ashwini from Vidyamargam addressed the students and stressed the importance of using eco-friendly material in the preparations of the idols of Lord Ganesha. Her team members conducted a presentation that outlined the harm caused by idols made with materials such as Plaster of Paris, etc. at the time of immersion. During the discussion there was an active participation from the students with amazing responses aimed at creating an eco-friendly atmosphere around the time of the season of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The students, divided into ten groups in order of their classes, were provided with clay by the members of Vidyamargam.  The ten instructors of Vidyamargam distributed themselves in each of these groups to personally instruct and assist the members of the group. It was indeed an efficient and effective arrangement since there was individual guidance and encouragement. To express their love and gratitude to Lord Ganesha for being with us, some students melodiously and joyously sang the 'Aarthi Prayer' – a prayer of praise and thanks to Lord Ganesha.  Another group of students joined in singing the song 'Bholenath'.

The Greenline team members, Mr. Aristo and Ms. Jessica, were in attendance. They marvelled at the eco-friendly idols of Lord Ganesha intricately and artistically designed by the students. Besides capturing the snapshots on their cameras, they were assigned the difficult task of selecting the best five designed idols from each of the two sections – the Primary and the Secondary.  They announced the results at the end of the workshop Fr. Bernard Fernandes (Principal), Ms. Nicole Britto, the Headmistress, and Mrs. Matilda Fernandes, the Primary Head teacher interacted with students moulding the idols in their own distinctive style and their own 'vision' of Lord Ganesha.

The workshop ended with a prayer. Fr. Bernard thanked the entire team of Vidyamargam, in particular the coordinator, Ms. Sunanda  Nevase, for their guidance and assistance. He also thanked the Greenline team members for their presence and assistance in all the greening activities.

BIS # 3661 JAI VIDNYAN

Posted on 07:45 by Unknown
by BIS correspondent

BORIVALI-MUMBAI, AUGUST 30, 2013: Science… Oh how vividly it paints human life! Oh how wonderfully it slakes curiosity's thirst!

Science is thus an integral part of our existence. It explains everything from how we are born to why our Universe is what it is today. A scientific temperament is therefore a must to survive in today's world. A Science Club in a school is an ideal platform to inculcate this virtue and foster a spirit of enquiry. Don Bosco High School – Borivali, inaugurated its Science Club on the 30th of August 2013.

It was a beginning on a truly positive note. The traditional lamp was lit to invoke God's blessings. The dignitaries' present- Fr. Rector, Fr. Administrator and Miss Chausheela Pujare were given saplings as a token of life and beauty. Fr. Rector delivered an insightful address about Man's relation with Science. A skit showed how a sound scientific temperament can eradicate blind beliefs. The members of the Science Club were introduced to all present.

The establishment of the science club was possible only because of the untiring efforts of Miss Diana and Miss Venessa, who are the guiding lights of the Club.

After the program, the first activity of the Science Club commenced. It was a game of scientific dumb charades, wherein an unlabelled diagram was drawn and the students had to try and guess the terms. There was tremendous competition between the Isaac Newton's, the Thomson's, the Robert Hooke's and the Edwin Aldrins. The Aldrins emerged winners. Finally Fr. Baptist – our Administrator along with the students planted a sapling.

JAI VIDNYAN!

BIS # 3659 A GLORIOUS GOVINDA DAY FOR DON BOSCO LONAVLA

Posted on 07:44 by Unknown
by BIS correspondent

LONAVLA- MAHARASHTRA, AUGUST 30, 2013:  What was meant to be a regular exhibition of the traditional 'Pot-breaking practice' on the eve of Gokulashtami turned out to be a day of glory for eighteen students of Std. VIII of Don Bosco Lonavla. The Kaivalyadham Vidyaniketan School - Lonavla organised an Inter school Dahi-handi Competition on their grounds on 29th August 2013. The two participating teams were from the hosting school and Don Bosco Lonavla respectively. The event began with the felicitation of the Chief Guest Mr. Kadu, BJP leader and social worker and Ms. Bhosale, the Principal of Kaivalyadham Vidyaniketan.

A short presentation on the origins of the feast of Janmashtami and the life of Lord Krishna followed the felicitation. The team from Don Bosco Lonavla was supposed to break the pot first after lots were drawn in their favour. The rules of the competition were explained to the participating teams. According to the rules each team would get 3 chances to break the pot. Each team had to make the pyramid formation and every attempt had a maximum time limit of 6 minutes. Before breaking the pot, both the teams had to do the customary salute in the pyramid formation. This practice of making the salute itself boosted the confidence of the participating teams.

When the Don Bosco team, under the guidance of their coach, Saurabh Khillare, began their first attempt, the pot, hanging 12 feet high seemed out of reach and the continuous splashing of water also took a toll on the human pyramid. The team from Kaivalyadham was the next to make an attempt but also failed in reaching the pot. In their second attempt, Don Bosco School changed strategy and replaced their 'Govinda' to Ashish Jadhav. Ashish reached the pot but found the pot too tough to be broken with bare hands. This was followed by another unsuccessful attempt by Kaivalyadham. In their third attempt, the Don Bosco team was provided with a baton to break the pot, the Govinda of the Don Bosco team courageously leapt to reach the pot when he realised the pyramid was crumbling. Although he did not break the pot, his courage and the spirit of the team had already won the hearts of the judges and they were declared the winners of the Dahi-Handi competition. Since the pot had to be broken, it was lowered for the runners-up team, who was also exhausted but completed the pyramid and broke the pot ceremoniously.

At the end of the event, the Principal of Kaivalyadham Vidyaniketan was all praise for the courage and showmanship of the participating teams. The students of Don Bosco team were elated with the exultation and praise they received and were eager to show a better performance next year.

BIS # 3656 GERMAN BAKER AT DON BOSCO COLLEGE-KURLA

Posted on 05:04 by Unknown

Fr. Colbert da Silva

KURLA-MUMBAI, AUGUST 30, 2013: Don Bosco College – Hospitality Studies, Kurla was privileged to host a series of comprehensive bakery workshops on German breads, cakes and pastries. This was skillfully conducted by German Master Baker, Mr. Andre Houben from the Akademie Deutsches Bäckerhandwerk, Weinheim , Germany.

Master baker Andre was brilliant. Utilizing the locally available raw material he was able to replicate the amazing German breads and pastries. In the elaborate workshops he conducted, he taught various breads like the humble breakfast loaf, Zoff German Bread, spicy wheat sticks, the Swabian mixed wheat bread as well as an array of cakes and pastries like apple strudel, butter cake, quiche and the sinfully delicious Sacher torte.

The two hundred odd participants ranged from Hospitality management students to entrepreneurs, industry professionals and experts in the field of bakery and confectionery. During the brief two weeks that Mr. Houben was on campus he patiently and meticulously guided all participants through the intricacies of pretzels, German Stollen and a whole range of nearly ten different products with his time-tested recipes and detailed techniques in the art of baking. Students were enamored with the range of products taught and were motivated and encouraged to experiment and challenge themselves at every stage. "We learned about the Bakers Percentage and the science of preparatory methods, precise quantities, right ingredients and correct timing. We were delighted that everything we prepared came out so well." said Neville Mascarenhas one of the students.

In his report Mr. Andre Houben wrote, "During my stay in India I only met very nice, helpful and open minded people. I enjoyed the workshops with the kids a lot. To see, how easy it is to get a nice smile 'just' from making bread together." He further added, "With a few tricks and the local raw materials we were able to make very nice bread and pastry products. For example we replaced rye flour in the recipes by using the atta flour."

The brief exposure to International baking and confectionery introduced the students to not just German products but also the art used by international practitioners and spurred them to strive for greater challenges in the hospitality industry.

BIS # 3650 PRESS RELEASE FROM DON BOSCO HIGH SCHOOL MATUNGA PTA

Posted on 02:54 by Unknown
MATUNGA-MUMBAI,AUGUST 28,2013: The Parents Teachers Association of Don Bosco School, Matunga held a meeting on 24.08.2013 at 2.30 p.m. in the School Premises in the presence of  the Manager, Principal and other staff members in light of the incident which happened on 19.08.2013 wherein a mob from a political party barged in the school premises during the lunch recess and into the Principal's office. They raised protest with regard to the false allegation of some Parents of the school children being forced to teach the students and also to the false allegation of compulsory contribution being sought from the parents of the school children.

The P.T.A members expressed their admiration and support for the Education and other facilities being provided by the school for decades. The P.T.A members also took strong objection to the fact that a political party trespassed into the school premises and sought to interfere into the working of the school. It was opined that if there was any complaint or grievance the same should have been placed before the P.T.A as also the School Management to have the same resolved and if the parent was still dissatisfied he could complain to the Education Board for resolving the same and there is no scope for any outside political interference in the working of the Educational Institution.

It is clarified by P.T.A that no parent was ever forced to teach in the school but only during the absence of the teacher sent for mandatory training provided by the B.M.C/State Government that some parents volunteered to mind the class for a few sessions and on few occasions and no teaching session was held by any such parent.

With regard to the allegation of compulsory contribution all members clarified that there was no compulsion with regard to contributions for the various activities like Sports, Cultural Festivals, Annual Day, Upgradation of education facilities, to name a few. All contribution have always been voluntary. Various facilities being provided at Don Bosco Matunga is a prime reason for enrolling their children in this Institution. All contributions are for co-curricular activities which have always benefited the students of Don Bosco.

Strong protest was registered with regard to disgruntled parents approaching a political party for redressal of grievance inspite of grievance redressal mechanism being available in the institution itself.

BIS # 3642 RAKSHA BANDHAN WITH THE 'SAMAJ RAKSHAKS'

Posted on 22:35 by Unknown
by BIS correspondent

LONAVLA-MAHARASHTRA, AUGUST 21, 2013: Accompanied by the school flag, national flag and placards displaying peace and unity, and shouting slogans like 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram', the standard VI students of Don Bosco High School, Lonavla, marched towards the Lonavla Police Station on Tuesday 20 August, 2013, to celebrate the festival of 'Raksha Bandhan' with the local police officers. The idea was to felicitate the police officials by the symbolic 'Rakhi' for their tireless efforts at maintaining peace and stability as well as ensuring security of all people.

The school and college have taken the initiative to pay homage to our country during the month of August. To commemorate this, the students of standard VI took upon themselves the novel idea of visiting the local Police officials and expressing their gratitude to them. They decided to tie 'rakhis' to all the officers. The students, accompanied by Ms. Gauri Chimbalkar, Ms. Ujwala Thombre, Mr. Leeva Buthello and Bro. Bosco Carvalho, left for the police station at 10:00 a.m. At the first station, the group received a warm welcome. Mr. Santosh Patil, A.P.I. and Mr. Vaibhav Kalubarme, Division in-charge, were pleasantly surprised by the thoughtfulness of the school students and expressed their thankfulness to the Principal and teachers for the same.

After performing the ceremonial tying of 'rakhis', Mr. Patil addressed the students and urged them to listen to their teachers, study well and become successful in life. The group of students proceeded to the other police station in the town where they received a warm welcome. Mr. Vishnu Pawar, P.I. was taken aback with the gesture of the students. In his short speech, he requested the students to become good citizens and insisted on the need to be the ears, eyes of the society at all times. Ms. Chimbalkar thanked the entire team of police for giving them short yet sweet moments of interaction and also for all the arrangements done. She also assured hundred percent co-operation from the students in any endeavor. The assembly stood in attention for the singing of 'Vande Mataram', after which they dispersed.

The idea of celebrating 'Raksha Bandhan' with the 'Samaj Rakshaks' was the brainchild of Ms. Chimbalkar. She indeed deserves commendation for her thoughtfulness. Initiatives of such a nature help build bonds of unity among people as well as leaders.

BIS # 3641 STORY OF THE SEED

Posted on 22:34 by Unknown
by BIS correspondent

VIRAR-MUMBAI, AUGUST 21, 2013: This is the story of a seed, the seed which was sown during the year 2007 at Resurrection Church, Virar known as the Salesian Co-operators.

This seed was constantly watered and manured by the Unit Delegates - Fr. Blany Pinto & Fr. Lawrence D'Souza, Provincial Delegate Fr. Elias Dias and Fr. Wilfred D'Souza along with the Provincial Co-ordinator Ms. Claudina Pinto.

The initial immature stages of growth for this seed were difficult and fear filled, but then the spirit of Don Bosco, along with his favourite interceder Mother Mary, obtained special graces from Jesus, helped the Salesian priests to build a strong fence of Love and Faith around the seed.

The seed was carefully nurtured to adapt to various weather changes, while the growth remained constant. Finally there was a moment of great joy to see the seed turn into a beautiful plant.  This plant propped out 10 little buds in the form of Salesian Aspirants and finally on the 18th of August, 2013 the first 3 flowers bloomed, making their promise to spread the fragrance of Christ as Salesian Co-operators.

Fr. Wilfred was the main celebrant of the solemn mass, along with concelebrants Fr. Lawrence D'Souza, Fr. Reggie Gracias, Fr. Blany Pinto and Fr. Prashant Saldanha. During the introduction, Fr. Lawrence D'Souza highlighted the essence of Salesian Co-operators. Fr. Blany Pinto, the Unit delegate briefed the role of Salesian Co-operators and the charism of Don Bosco in his homily. After the homily Mrs. Marie Rodrigues, Mrs. Genevieve Monterio and Mr. Dian D'souza made their promise in the presence of Mrs. Sharon the newly elected Provincial Co-ordinator, and became the first three, promised Salesian Co-operators of Virar Unit. After signing their commitment they were given candles, signifying the light they should be for the people in the Don Bosco way.

After the mass this joy was extended with a short get-together at the Resurrection Church hall, where the Salesian family members along with the delegates and Provincial Council team were present. Fr. Wilfred D'Souza expressed the joy on behalf of Fr. Elias Dias, who had sent a token of love to the three promised members.

The story of the seed is incomplete without acknowledging thanks to our gracious God, who chose the former Parish Priests, Fr. Dominic Lisboa, Fr. Orville Coutinho, Fr. Franco Pereira and Fr. Blany Pinto to plough the soil so that this seed could be sown. A special thanks to the Salesian congregation without whom the seed would have been lost.  The seed is now awaiting its new form - to witness growth into a blossoming tree, to spread the fragrance of love and nourish with faith, in the Don Bosco way.
